  • Kilsheelan Irish Setters were established in the late 1970s and have been breeding traditional working red setters since 1981. We are passionate and dedicated to producing outstanding bird dogs, proven under NZ hunting conditions. All our breeding has been for the sole purpose of improving the working ability of the Irish setter in New Zealand.

  • Note that in NZ, our setters are expected to retrieve game shot over them in the field and they compete against all HPR breeds in P&S gundog trials.
  • Kilsheelan Irish setters are the most winning dogs in NZ P&S trials over the last 30 years.
  • We have imported working Irish setters from Eire, UK, Scandanavia and Australia and used them to improve our working genetics.
  • We have handled and titled (on wild gamebirds) the only 3 Grand Field Champions (P&S) in NZ, plus another 4 Field Champions.
  • We have handled and titled (on simulated game) 4 Grand Field Trial Champions in NZ, plus another 9 Field Trial Champions.
  • We have bred multiple FChs and FTChs for others, including Australian FTCHs.
  • We have handled Kilsheelan setters to 13 National P&S titles. Kilsheelan dogs owned and handled by others have also won multiple NTL gundog titles.
  • In 2023 GFCh & NTL GFTCh Gamemaster Tanner (imp Aust) was the first P&S dog to be inducted into the NZGTA Hall of Fame.
  • NZGTA Game Trial Dog of the Year in 2019 (from all gundog breeds) was Tanner’s grand-daughter, GFCh & NTL GFTCh Kilsheelan Stellar.
  • NZGTA Game Trial Dog of the Year in 2008 (from all gundog breeds) was Stellar’s grand-dam GFCh & FTCh Lusca Skippy (imp Eire).
  • We have exported more than 20 Kilsheelan dogs, to Australia, Norway, Finland and Canada.

Past Stars
Many great dogs have played a part in our kennels and our lives. These dogs have made memorable contributions to our hunting pleasure and our breeding success, and to the working Irish setter in New Zealand. We are grateful to have shared in their lives.

    Erinvale Captain (imp UK) 1983-1997 UK FTCh Rusler Boy ex Kelly of Erinvale breeder Billy Darragh. Chay won 15 Championship trials in NZ including the South Island Champ in 1991, the North Island wild game Championship in 1992, plus 3 open trials on wild birds before the introduction of Champ game trials here. P&S Game Trial DOY 1992. P&S Dog of Year 3 times 1990-1992. He sired 8 FTChs from three outcross bitches, sire of FTChs in NZ and Australia. In the UK, Chay won the Kennel Club Derby Stake 1984 and 5 Open grouse stake awards as a 2-year old in 1985 handled by Billy Darragh (UK) and John G (NZ)

Kilsheelan Irish Setters
As of 2024, Kilsheelan Irish setters are the most winning dogs in NZ pointer and setter gundog trials in the last 30 years, with the kennel breeding and/or owning over 50% of the titled Field Champions, made up in trials on wild pheasant and quail. Kilsheelan-bred or -owned dogs have won 90% of P&S Championship pheasant trials in the last ten years.
